The Open Door Centre exists to make a positive difference in the lives of adults with learning disabilities, enabling our members to achieve their highest potential. We do this by providing a range of activities within a safe, supportive and non-judgemental environment, and members are involved in every level of decision making about the running of the Centre. Members are encouraged to be independent adults, understanding their rights and choices, in order to become respected, confident, valued members of society.

The Open Door Centre is organising a Community Choral Festival which will take place on Sunday 12th June 2022 at the Town Gardens Bowl. The purpose of the festival is to showcase the diversity of talent in Swindon, providing a family day of music in the town’s iconic venue, and what better way to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, than an event organised by a group which received one of the first Queen’s Awards for Voluntary Service (in 2011).

There is no charge for choirs to perform and no charge for the audience to attend. There will be food on sale – hot dogs, burgers, tea, coffee and cake – and a licenced bar. Any money raised will go to The Open Door Centre.

We wish to organise a diverse cultural event of local choirs which will enable smaller and newer groups to have the opportunity to perform in a unique setting; the 1930’s Town Gardens Bowl. We also hope to offer a singing workshop prior to the event. The event is being organised by The Open Door Centre and will give the members, who are adults with learning disabilities, educational opportunities including stewarding, catering, and general event management, as well as a performance opportunity for the choir, and the chance to demonstrate through artwork their enthusiasm for the Jubilee. The Centre is member-led and the opportunity to organise a larger event will challenge boundaries and give them confidence in their abilities, as well as showcasing just how much adults with learning disabilities can achieve.

We would like to hear from choirs who want to take part in this community event – this is your chance to perform!

To register your interest, please send your details to Susan Pearson, susandypearson@outlook.com including the name of your choir, the name of a contact and an email address.
